Dubai Midnight Marathon shows security of city

Nearly 10,000 youth participated Thursday in the Dubai Midnight Marathon, which is aimed at showing the safety of the tourism environment of the emirate.
The unique marathon began at 00:00 midnight (local time) on Thursday at the foot of the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa, where some 10,000 youngsters from 120 countries participated in the 3.2 kilometer run.
Instead of competing for speed, most participants enjoyed the sporting event while appreciating the intoxicating night scenes of Dubai.
“It’s my first experience to run in midnight, and I think it will be fun, I’m so excited,” said participant Hasan Omar.
Competitors ran in downtown Dubai and passed some landmark buildings including Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Shopping Center.
With the slogan “Safety Definitely Dubai,” the event aimed at providing an opportunity for people to enjoy the beautiful night cityscape and positioning Dubai as a safe tourism destination.
“We are saying Dubai is the safest city in the world, not only that, the people are happy. Everybody [is] happy here, that’s why we are saying the safest city is in Dubai,” said Sathar Al Karan, founder of the Dubai Midnight Marathon.


It is the first time for Dubai to hold the midnight marathon, and the full-length Midnight Marathon will take place next year, according to the organizers. (CCTV)

Dubai delivers numerous unique events each year that provide fun and family entertainment for both visitors and residents with 2012 being no different.
This year Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) is organising another unique event after it announced the launch of the world’s first “Midnight Marathon” which will take place under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and the Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council.
The event will be officially launched on December 12 at the iconic Atmosphere Hotel located in the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, with the main event taking place in the Downtown Dubai area.
The launch ceremony for Midnight Marathon will be graced with the presence of international celebrities.
Among those celebrities that will be present during the launch will be legendary Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan whose presence has been confirmed subject to his health and physical fitness.
The actual marathon will be 42 kilometres long and will see the arrival of some of the most famous marathon runners in the world but that event will not take place this year and has been replaced with a 3.2-kilometre Midnight fun run.
The Midnight fun run will take place under the name of “No Sun Fun Run” and will see the participation of various local and international sports personalities in addition to Dubai residents and visitors.
To participate in the fun run residents and visitors will have to register on the yet to be launched Dubai Midnight Marathon website with only a limited 12,000 people who register on a first come first serve basis allowed to participate.
The entire 42km marathon will take place in the next incarnation of the event expected in 2013.
In addition to races fun activities and family entertainment events have also been organised by the DTCM during the launch ceremony which will begin from 8 pm and continue till midnight when the Fun Run will take place.
According to The Khaleej Times speaking about the event DTCM’s business development director Shaikha Ebrahim Al Mutawa said:
“The Dubai Marathon brings together the diversity of population to celebrate the safe environment, cosmopolitan outlook, active and healthy lifestyle and glorious venues of Dubai. And what could showcase these better than a midnight run in the city that stays awake for its people, round the clock.”
Sathar Al Karan, director, Business Development in the Private Office of Shaikh Khalifa bin Khalid Al Hamed also confirmed the presence of Amitabh Bachchan at the launch event and said:
“We are planning to bring 12 famous celebrities from different fields and different nationalities to this event happening on 12/12/12. Amitabh Bachchan has agreed to come depending on his health conditions then.”
This event will add another milestone for Dubai which has hosted a number of innovative and unique events that attract tourists from all around the world.

DTCM to organize Dubai Midnight Marathon Launching the biggest inflatable promotional billboard worldwide

Under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council for Dubai Government, the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) in Dubai is to organise the Dubai Midnight Marathon, a unique running event, at Burj Park, to position Dubai as tourism safety destination.
To be held at midnight, the first of its kind athletic event in the world will highlight the safety and sociability of its community, as an unparalleled urban enclave for business, leisure or long-term living.
Khalid Bin Sulayem, Director General – DTCM, said the Dubai Midnight Marathon is a proclamation to the world of the safe, secure and positive environment that citizens and visitors of Dubai enjoy as per Sheikh Mohammed strategy on safe Dubai.
“Chosen a befitting time to mark its commencement on 12.12.12 at 12 midnight, Dubai Midnight Marathon is to be an integral part of the Dubai Calendar of events in the future.”
Adding, Bin Sulayem said the fun run will be held on the 13.12.12 from 6pm onwards. The come alive with music concerts and celebrity events at the Burj Khalifa Park.
“The Dubai Midnight Marathon is conceived as a global event, which will be flagged off with a 3.2 km fun run for the public in the inaugural edition whereas the fun run will be held on the 13.12.12 starting from 12 midnight.”
Elaborating, Bin Sulayem said the full-length marathon will see the participation of world-renowned professional marathoners in the coming years. “However, the event is open to only the first 12000 who register.”

Shaikha Ebrahim AlMutawa, Director, Business Development – DTCM, said the first ever Dubai Midnight Marathon is one of the sustainable initiatives of the Dubai Green Award Program promoting Dubai as a tourism safety destination.
“We are targeting Dubai community as full day program set for the family. “There are activities areas which can accommodate up to 8,000 people at once, and stage performance includes local and international performers who will start at 6pm up to midnight.”
AlMutawa emphasized that the official stage program will start at 8pm, and then it will be followed by the fun run which will end by 12 midnight at the Burj Khalifa Park. “DTCM is fully geared up with an all-inclusive marketing plan to promote the event and encourage participation in the fun run.”
Majid Al Marri, Director of Hotel Classification Division – DTCM, said the DMM, in line with Dubai strategic plan, crystallizes all the effort being exerted to make Dubai on top of all tourist destinations around the globe. “These special two days are designed to serve and entertain corporate and public audience.
Adding, Al Marri said DTCM, in collaboration with the UAE Logos, will be breaking the Guinness records for organising the biggest eco board in the world which will be in Burj Park.
“The biggest inflatable billboard system in terms of the maximum number of logos in one billboard” which will be approved by the Guinness World Records Organization, the board sign is 10meters height, and 100 long, works by inflating system, and made from eco friendly materials that can be moved and used in many places without harming or damaging the environment,” he said, noting that all the DTCM events and activities are in support to sustainability and green concept in the market.
The DTCM event launching will be announced through a press conference on 12/12/2012 while the Fun Run and unveiling of the largest billboard in the world the marathon will be launched on 13/12/2012 at Burj Khalifa Park.
Al Marri said DTCM has taken the necessary arrangements to ensure the success of the event by coordinating with several government departments, such as Dubai Police, Dubai Ambulance, RTA, Department of Health, Dubai Sport Council, Dubai Municipality, Community Development Authority, and Emaar to ensure that the services are set for the comfort and safety of the audience.
“Also dedicated team is assigned to escort the public to activities area. Many gifts and valuable prizes will be given during the 13th of December.”
Meanwhile, the Dubai Municipality is to partner the DMM by taking part in the Fun Run, and providing logistic support via a specialized service team dedicated for such events.
Engineer Hussain Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality, said Dubai Municipality, has always been very keen since its inception, to support such events and activities to spread and develop sports culture among members of the society, basically due to the importance of sports for a healthy life.
“Dubai Municipality, being mainly a service provider for the benefit of the society, has accomplished many projects for encouraging sports practising, by building walk and cycle tracks across the emirate, apart from several public parks equipped with sports facilities and playgrounds.”
Adding, Eng Lootah said Dubai Municipality has also built a number of sports courts across the emirate in the service of the public and to develop sports culture in the society.
“Further, Dubai Municipality organizes and supports a number of sports activities and events, such as ‘Let’s Walk’ – the biggest drive to boost walking in the emirate, let alone the marathons and charity sports activities held around Dubai.”
Dr Ahmed Al-Sharif, Secretary General of Dubai Sports Council, said the DMM, is being held under the generous patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, to improve sports sector and develop members of the society awareness about the significance of physical fitness for building an excellent sports society and giving a boost to physical practices across the emirate.
“Dubai Sports Council has always been very keen on supporting all sports and social activities and events in the emirate, particularly those organized by the DTCM in view of a fruitful partnership aimed to boost sports tourism, promote Dubai as a world destination for sports tourism, and support individual and group sports alike.”
Adding, Dr Al-Sharif said the DMM will help enhance Dubai position as one of the main cities worldwide in terms of physical fitness activities, by providing all the areas and spaces needed to practice physical exercises in public parks, and encouraging all members of the society, be they nationals or residents, to exercise in a safe and joyful environment.”

Dubai Midnight Marathon: Going truly international

It was a moment to celebrate for the many professionals, volunteers and the organising committee of the ‘Dubai Midnight Marathon’ on Thursday night and the early hours of Friday (today) at the BurjKhalifa. 


Dubbed as the ‘No Sun Fun Run’, the event was a litmus test for what would be a full fledged international marathon at midnight next year.
The inaugural version this year (3.2km fun run) around the start and finish point at the BurjKhalifa was a big hit among the many who turned up with friends and families from 5pm on Thursday.
The special invitees from all kinds of fields including cine stars; past and present sports legends; stalls; children’s fun zones; tuck shops selling food beverages and souveniers; star live concerts; and other forms of entertainment gave the atmosphere a festive look prior to the 11pm start.
Under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) in Dubai are the organisers of the Dubai Midnight Marathon, a unique running event, at Burj Park, to position Dubai as tourism safety destination.
The event is strongly backed by various government sports, industrial and business entities apart from big time sponsors from the private sector.

Famous Arabic and English language pop groups were to perform at the BurjKhalifa Steps from 7pm to 9pm and around 1,200 girls were set for a traditional hair dance in an effort to enter the Guinness Book of World Records. Also lined up were a photography and painting exhibition about Dubai at the BurjKhalifa Park.
An attempt at the world record for the largest eco-board featuring the largest number of logos was another feature scheduled in a tightly yet mostly entertaining evening.
For the world class hotels in Dubai in and around Emmar Boulevard and Burj Khalifa, it was brisk business this week prior to the inaugural run as special holiday packages brought in thousands from all over the world.
“If the event becomes a permanent feature in the city, business will be good not only for the hospitality industry in and around the BurjKhalifa but Dubai as a whole,” said a junior F&B executive who preferred not to be named, on Thursday evening.
